Kinja'd!!!

I need new winter tires for my DD.

L ooking for 215/55/r16. Thinking Blizzak ws80s, H akkas R3, or maybe X-ice if the prices aren’t too crazy. Most of my commute is highway, but I drop abou t 800ft in elevation so 6" of snow at home could be 1/2" dusting or slush which means work rarely shuts down. I used to have Nokian Nordman 5s, which were great but a bit more suited for deep snow. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

The Blizzaks made my Abarth virtually unstoppable on I-70 out here during anything that left the highway open. And by that I mean it stopped under braking like it was dry road. I never came close to finding their limits.

good to see if there is a deal. Seems the i 2 and i3s are being combined to the new xice snow. At first I thought that was odd to stop as they have great reviews.

I don’t think you can go wrong with any of those winter tires so I would say it’s just down to price and availability.

I personally run General Tire Altimax Arctic 12 in a 185/65 R15 on cheap alloys as my winter set because that’s what the tire shop could get in quickest at the time (the factory is a 195/55 R16) . Not a premium winter tire, but very good performance for the price.

I’m still a fan of Blizzaks, they are a fantastic snow tire that doesn’t sound like grinding stones on dry pavement. I’ve had three sets now and they have gone easily 20,000 miles Before they hit the wear bars

Do you do a lot of highway driving or local? I got about 40k  on my nokians in 6 years

How do they seem to be wearing? Have you gotten decent mileage   out of them?

The priceto value ratio is very appealing, they’re like 90+ % of the performance for 66 % of the cost

I believe WS80 has been replaced by WS90 now.

From my quick bit of research...

https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/testDisplay.jsp?ttid=250

X-Ice 3 has the best non-snow road manners while having slightly less snow traction. I suppose this tracks as I had Pilot Alpin PA4 on my 335xi and driving them in non-snowy conditions they legit felt like a halfway decently sporty all-season tire. Even with “closeout” pricing they’re more expensive than the others by at least $20/tire.

I think if it were me it’d probably be between the X-Ice 3 and maybe also the Conti Viking 7 mentioned in that test. Looks like it has better road manners than the WS90 and also cheaper.

The X-Ice SNOW looks potentially promising but it’s another $20+/tire above the X-Ice 3.

Well that car doesn’t run anymore. I haven’t gotten snows for the van yet.
